The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
