In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Events
This event occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
