Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
