A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
